Clinical Study Preliminary Results Presented on Real-Time Data with the Calypso® 4D Localization System at the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO) 46th Annual Meeting

Atlanta, GA – October 3, 2004 – Results from four scientific investigations using the Calypso® 4D Localization System and Beacon® Electromagnetic Transponders will be presented at the 46th Annual American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO) meeting, October 3 – 7.

Designed to address the growing need for objective, accurate, and continuous confirmation of a radiation therapy target within the body during treatment, the Calypso® 4D Localization System works by generating an AC electromagnetic field, which excites wireless, implanted markers or Beacon® Electromagnetic Transponders. Through this interface, a target’s position is identified for precise localization and tracking before and during radiation therapy without added ionizing radiation.

Data from the Calypso® 4D Localization System will be highlighted in four abstracts presented at the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO) meeting at the Georgia World Congress Center. Preliminary clinical study data on target motion of the prostate will be presented by MD Anderson Cancer Center Orlando. The data is part of a multi-center IDE clinical study currently underway. "For the first time in radiation therapy, true real-time information about target areas will be obtained with the Calypso System. This is achieved without the use of ionizing radiation such as in fluoroscopy, and will be performed during the process of radiation delivery. This is a unique technology from which we will learn a significant deal about daily organ motion during treatment. The data presented by Twyla Willoughby at this year's ASTRO meeting demonstrates the remarkable accuracy of this system used in a clinical situation in patients with localized prostate cancer," said Patrick Kupelian, MD, of MD Anderson Cancer Center Orlando and principal investigator studying the Calypso® 4D Localization System.

Abstracts Presented at ASTRO:

Implant Experience and Positional Stability of AC Electromagnetic Beacon® Electromagnetic Transponders Used to Localize Patients for External Beam Radiation Therapy of the Prostate, Poster Presentation # 1018 by Twyla Willoughby, et al, MD Anderson Cancer Center Orlando, October 4, 10:15 a.m. – 11:45 a.m.

Accuracy of a 4D Magnetic Localization System: Evaluation in the Clinical Environment, Poster Display #2455, James Balter, et al., University of Michigan Medical Center

Principles of AC Magnetic Fields for Objective and Continuous Target Localization in Radiation Therapy, Poster Display #2198, Timothy Mate, et al., Swedish Medical Center

The Feasibility of Using GPS Fiducials to Track NSCLC Lesions, Poster Display #2334, Kenneth Forster, et al., University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center

"Knowing the precise location of the treatment target in real-time is essential to effectively manage target motion. Our goal is to deliver a non-ionizing method for radiation therapy setup and monitoring to radiation oncology. Objective and accurate motion information is essential for the quality delivery of state-of-the-art treatment techniques such as IMRT and adaptive radiation therapy,” said Eric R. Meier, President and CEO, Calypso® Medical.
